Well, well, well. Mr. Nice Guy had a petulant side. Go figure. The more time that passed as they drove, the more suffocating the silence between them became.

That scornful voice from her past berated her brain. Well? Aren’t you going to say anything? No, of course not. Little Miss Compromise always wants to keep everyone and everything on an even keel. God forbid she raise her voice or stand up for herself. Not when it’s easier to keep her mouth shut, voice no opinion, and act like everything’s hunky-dory in her pretty pink world. I swear, you’re a Barbie doll without the personality. All plastic smiles and no brains. It’s a wonder you can get dressed by yourself every morning.

By the time they crossed into Indiana, she could barely breathe without tasting Spence’s resentment on every inhale and hearing Teddy’s continued diatribe between her ears. Enough. From both of them. Time to reopen lines of communication. But she wouldn’t lower herself to Teddy’s method of belittling and badgering to get Spence to talk. Based on past experiences with him, she figured she should be able to open a discussion with honesty and get an adult conversation going.

“How long do you plan to nurse your grudge against me?” she asked, swirling in the passenger seat to face his profile.

He took his eyes off the road only long enough to glare at her before replying, “Well, let’s see. I haven’t spoken to my sister for the last ten years and up until two days ago, the same could be said for my brother. You do the math.”

“It’s hardly the same situation. I never said I didn’t believe what happened to you. Or that I thought what your parents did was right. All I said was that I understood their fear for you and your future when you chose something as dicey as music over what could have been a much more lucrative career.”

“Yeah, I heard you loud and clear the first time. You also accused me of being jealous of my pompous, tight-ass brother.”

“Maybe you didn’t hear me as loud and clear as you thought. I never said you were jealous of Lawrence. I said you were jealous that your parents treated him differently when he decided to pursue his love of writing than they treated you when you pursued your love of music. And I also said I understood why you felt that way.”

“Big whoop. Thanks for your understanding.” He sneered the last word. “It must be very satisfying to be able to see both sides of a situation so fairly.”

Forgetting her hopes for an adult conversation, she blurted on a shaky laugh, “Oh my God, I can’t believe how childish you’re being about this.”

“You didn’t think I was so childish when you kissed me yesterday,” he muttered.

She wasn’t sure she heard him correctly. “What?”

“You kissed me, remember?”

He made it sound like she’d been caught plotting his murder. “Of course, I remember. I kissed you because I felt like you needed someone to remind you that you’re a decent guy with a lot going for you.
